Trip Overview
The Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake is one of the most rewarding trekking journeys in Nepal, combining the classic Annapurna Circuit route with a side trip to the stunning Tilicho Lake. This trek takes you through remote Himalayan villages, deep valleys, alpine forests, and high mountain deserts before crossing the famous Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters.
The journey starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani and continues along the traditional Annapurna Trail through Chame, Upper Pisang, Nawal, and Manang. As the landscape changes day by day, trekkers experience everything from green hills and pine forests to dramatic cliffs and snow-covered mountain scenery. Along the route, you’ll get incredible views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Chulu East, and several other Himalayan giants.
This trek is an amazing experience in and of itself, but there is one major highlight that you won’t want to miss: Tilicho Lake, which is located high in the mountains at 4,920 meters. The trail to this breathtaking lake is difficult, and you have to walk through the rocky paths, rugged terrain, and peaceful alpine surroundings. When you finally arrive at the lake, you’ll be amazed by the deep blue water surrounded by snowy peaks and dramatic mountain scenery.
After exploring Tilicho Lake, the trail joins the main Annapurna Circuit route again and continues toward Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi. From here, the journey becomes more challenging as you prepare to cross Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek at 5,416 meters. The early morning climb is tough, but the mountain views from the top make every step worth it. On clear days, you can see wide stretches of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges rising above the Himalayan landscape.
After that, the journey descends to Muktinath, a popular pilgrimage destination for both Buddhists and Hindus. The green landscapes of the lower Annapurna region give way to dry, high-altitude valleys beyond the pass.

Trekking Permits
You need a few permits for the Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake. These include the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS, or the trekking registration required for your trek. You may need to show these permits at different checkpoints along the trail, so keep them with you during the trek. The permits also help manage the number of trekkers and protect the Annapurna region.
Our team will arrange the required permits as part of the trekking package. Carry your original passport during the trek, as you may need it at checkpoints.
Fitness and Trek Preparation
This trek is graded challenging because of its long walking days, steep sections, rugged terrain, and the high altitude reached during the journey. You don’t need technical climbing skills, but you should be comfortable walking several hours a day on uneven mountain trails.
The trek gets challenging after Manang. The trail to Tilicho Base Camp has rough, exposed sections, and the hike to Tilicho Lake is steep and rocky, with the added challenge of high altitude. Another difficult part of the trek is crossing Thorong La Pass, which stands at 5,416 meters.
Regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, and cardiovascular exercise before the trek can make a significant difference. Build endurance gradually rather than trying to prepare through intense exercise shortly before departure.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude is something you need to take seriously on this trek. The trail starts at a lower elevation and gradually goes higher as you pass through Chame, Pisang, Nawal, and Manang. From there, you head toward the higher areas around Tilicho Lake and Thorong La.
The acclimatization day in Manang gives your body some time to adjust. You can take an easy walk around the village or hike for a while toward Gangapurna Lake instead of spending the whole day in the teahouse. Keeping the day light and staying active can help you get used to the higher altitude.
You may experience thinner air, reduced appetite, mild headaches, or unusual tiredness as you climb higher. Stay hydrated, eat well, sleep well, and maintain a slow, comfortable pace.
If you develop a severe or persistent headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual weakness, confusion, or difficulty breathing, inform your guide immediately. Do not continue climbing if you are experiencing significant symptoms of altitude sickness.
Tilicho Lake Excursion
Tilicho Lake is one of the trek’s main highlights. It sits at around 4,920 meters and is reached by taking a side trail from the main Annapurna Circuit route.
As you leave Manang and head toward Tilicho Base Camp, the landscape gets drier and more rugged. After Khangsar, the trail narrows in places. You will come across steep slopes, loose rocks, and a few sections where you need to watch your footing.
The early-morning hike from Tilicho Base Camp to the lake can be cold and physically demanding, but the changing mountain scenery makes the effort worthwhile. When the weather is clear, the turquoise-blue lake surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks creates one of the most memorable sights of the entire trek.
Because this is a high-altitude excursion, the exact pace and timing may be adjusted based on weather, trail conditions, and the group’s physical condition.
Thorong La Pass Crossing
Crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters is the highest and most challenging part of the trek. The crossing begins early in the morning because weather conditions are often more favorable early on.
The climb from Thorong Phedi can be tough. The trail is steep in some places, and the thin air makes it harder. Walk slowly and take breaks when you need them. Keep your breathing steady and try to maintain a pace that feels comfortable.
Once you reach Thorong La, you can see prayer flags and mountains all around. Reaching the highest point of the trek feels great. After spending some time at the pass, the trail drops down toward Muktinath. The scenery also changes as you enter Mustang’s dry, open landscape.
Weather can change quickly around the pass. If conditions become unsafe because of heavy snowfall, strong winds, or poor visibility, your guide may recommend changing the plan.
Weather and Trail Conditions
The weather changes considerably along the Annapurna Circuit because of the large variation in elevation and landscape.
The lower sections around Dharapani and Chame can be relatively green and mild, with forests, rivers, and agricultural land. Around Manang, the environment becomes much drier and more alpine, with fewer trees and wider mountain valleys.
The Tilicho route and Thorong La section can be considerably colder, especially early in the morning. Snow and ice may affect the higher trail during winter and periods of bad weather.
Spring and autumn generally provide the most favorable trekking conditions, with good visibility and relatively stable weather. During the monsoon season, rain can affect the lower sections, while winter brings colder temperatures and possible snow around the high passes.
Regardless of the season, carry waterproof and warm layers because mountain weather can change unexpectedly.
Accommodation
Accommodation during the trek is mainly provided in local teahouses and lodges. These are simple mountain accommodations designed primarily for trekkers and generally provide a clean bed, blankets, dining areas, and basic facilities.
Facilities become more basic as you move toward Tilicho Base Camp and the higher sections of the circuit. Rooms may be simple, and shared bathrooms are common.
Some teahouses offer hot showers, Wi-Fi, and electronic charging, but these services are often limited at higher elevations and may require additional payment.
Meals and Drinking Water
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included during the trekking days. Most teahouses serve a mix of local food and common trekking meals. You can usually find dal bhat, noodles, rice, pasta, soup, vegetables, eggs, potatoes, and similar simple dishes.
Food options may be more limited in higher, more remote areas, especially around Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong Phedi. Trekking takes a lot of energy, so make sure you eat enough during the day.
You can get drinking water at teahouses and villages along the route. It is a good idea to carry a reusable bottle or hydration bladder. A water filter or purification tablets can also be useful, especially when you are staying in more remote areas.
Manang Acclimatization Day
Manang is an important stop on the Annapurna Circuit because it offers a chance to rest and acclimatize before moving into higher terrain.
You can spend the day exploring the village, visiting local monasteries, relaxing in a bakery or café, or taking a short acclimatization hike. Gangapurna Lake is a popular nearby option and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and glacier-fed landscape.
The purpose of the acclimatization day is not to exhaust yourself. Keep the activity light, drink plenty of water, and allow your body to adjust before continuing toward Tilicho Base Camp.
Local Culture and Mountain Villages
One strength of the Annapurna Circuit is the variety of communities and cultures along the route.
Villages such as Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, Ghyaru, Nawal, Braka, Manang, and Khangsar each have their own character and traditions. As you move toward Manang and the upper valley, Tibetan Buddhist influence becomes increasingly visible through monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and traditional stone houses.
Take some time to experience the local way of life instead of seeing the villages only as places to stay overnight. If you visit monasteries, follow the local customs and behave respectfully. When taking photos of local people, ask for permission first.
Electricity, Wi-Fi and Communication
Electricity is available in many teahouses, but access can become more limited as you reach remote and higher sections of the trail. Charging your phone, camera, or other devices may also cost extra.
Wi-Fi is available in some of the larger villages, including Manang, but the connection may be slow or unreliable. Once you reach areas like Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong Phedi, internet access becomes more limited.
Charging facilities can also be hard to find in these higher sections, so charge your devices whenever you can. A power bank is highly recommended. It is also useful to keep your phone and other electronics protected from cold temperatures.
Cash and Personal Expenses
Carry sufficient Nepali cash before heading into the higher sections of the circuit. Although some larger villages may have limited payment options, you should not depend on cards or ATMs during the trek.
You may need cash for hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, additional services, or unexpected expenses.
Keep some extra cash separate from your main wallet in case of an emergency.
Porter and Baggage
One porter is provided for every two trekkers. Your porter will carry the main trekking luggage, while you should carry a smaller daypack containing the items you need during the day.
Keep your passport, money, camera, phone, water, personal medication, warm layer, rain protection, and other important items in your daypack.
Because this trek includes high-altitude walking and several demanding sections, keeping your personal baggage light will make the journey considerably more comfortable.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake. Because the itinerary reaches 5,416 meters, check that your policy specifically covers high-altitude trekking at the elevation you will reach.
Your insurance should ideally include emergency medical treatment, helicopter evacuation where medically necessary, trip interruption, and other relevant trekking-related coverage.
Read the policy conditions carefully before purchasing insurance, especially the maximum altitude covered and any requirements for guided trekking.
Safety and Emergency Support
Your guide will monitor the group throughout the trek and guide altitude, weather, trail conditions, and walking pace.
The higher sections around Tilicho Lake and Thorong La require additional care because of altitude, cold temperatures, steep terrain, loose rocks, and changing weather.
If a trekker becomes unwell or injured, the itinerary can be adjusted as needed. This may involve resting at a lower elevation, changing an overnight stop, or arranging emergency assistance when required.
Mountain safety always takes priority over following the itinerary exactly as published.
What to Pack
Your packing requirements will depend on the season, but you should be prepared for both relatively mild lower elevations and very cold conditions at higher altitudes.
Recommended items include:
- Good-quality trekking boots with strong grip
- Comfortable trekking trousers and hiking clothes
- Thermal base layers
- Fleece or insulated jacket
- Warm down or similar high-altitude jacket
- Waterproof and windproof jacket
- Warm hat, gloves, and extra socks
- Sun hat or cap
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Sunscreen and lip balm
- Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder
- Water purification tablets or filtration system
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- Power bank and charging cables
- Personal toiletries and basic medication
- Small first-aid kit
- Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions
- Trekking poles
- Comfortable daypack
- Passport and travel documents
- Travel insurance details
- Nepali cash for personal expenses
Warm clothes are important at higher elevations on the trek. Nights can be very cold around Tilicho Base Camp, Yak Kharka, and Thorong Phedi. You will also need warm layers for the early-morning walk to Thorong La Pass.
Muktinath and the Lower Mustang Landscape
After crossing Thorong La, the landscape changes as you walk down toward Muktinath. The green valleys and forests from the earlier part of the trek slowly disappear, and the trail becomes drier and rockier. This is the landscape you see in the Mustang region, which gets much less rainfall because it lies in the rain shadow of the mountains.
Muktinath is a significant pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. The area has a strong spiritual atmosphere, and the temple complex attracts pilgrims from Nepal and India as well as visitors from around the world.
Please dress respectfully and follow local customs when visiting religious sites.
Responsible Trekking
The Annapurna region is a protected area, and many people living in the villages rely on tourism. Try to leave the trail as you found it.
Do not throw plastic bottles, food packets, tissues, or other rubbish on the trail. Use the bins available in the villages, or carry your waste until you find a proper place to dispose of it. Carrying a reusable bottle also helps reduce the amount of plastic you use.
You will pass through villages, monasteries, and other local places during the trek. Respect the local rules and customs, and do not disturb wildlife or enter private property without permission.
Tipping
Tipping is a common way of showing appreciation to trekking guides, porters, and support staff in Nepal. It is not compulsory, and there is no single fixed amount that every trekker must pay.
If you are satisfied with the service, you can offer a tip at the end of the trek based on the quality of service, the length of the journey, and your personal preference.
Itinerary Flexibility
The trekking plan can change depending on the trail conditions. Weather, snowfall, landslides, road conditions, or a lack of rooms in the teahouses can affect the schedule. Altitude problems may also require you to stop or take a different route. As a result, the actual trekking days may not always match the planned itinerary.
This is particularly relevant for the Tilicho Lake excursion and Thorong La Pass crossing, where weather and trail conditions can affect safety.
Your guide and trekking team will make the necessary decisions based on the conditions at the time. If changes are required, safety and the overall success of the trek will remain the priority.
Best Time to Trek
The most favorable periods for the Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake are generally spring and autumn.
March to May: Spring brings increasingly pleasant trekking conditions, clear mountain views, and colorful vegetation in the lower sections. As the season progresses, the weather generally becomes favorable in the higher sections.
June to August: The lower parts of the Annapurna Circuit get more rain during the monsoon. Trails can be muddy, and clouds often obscure mountain views. Manang and Mustang are much drier, but the weather can still change quickly at higher elevations.
September to November: Autumn is one of the most popular periods for the trek. Skies are often clearer after the monsoon, temperatures are suitable for trekking, and mountain views are usually excellent.
December to February: Winter can be very cold around Tilicho Lake and Thorong La, and snow is common in these areas. Heavy snow can make the trail to the pass difficult and sometimes impossible to cross. If you plan to trek in winter, be prepared for these conditions and carry suitable gear.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
The Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake is not simply a longer version of a standard circuit trek. Adding Tilicho Lake introduces a demanding high-altitude side trip, while crossing Thorong La adds another major challenge.
The route rewards you with an unusually wide variety of Himalayan landscapes: lush valleys and forests around the lower circuit, traditional villages and Buddhist culture around Manang, dry alpine terrain around Tilicho, the turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake, the dramatic crossing of Thorong La, and finally the arid landscapes surrounding Muktinath.
Take the higher sections slowly, respect the acclimatization schedule, listen to your guide, and give yourself time to enjoy the changing landscape. The combination of Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass is what gives this itinerary its distinctive character. It makes it one of the more complete high-altitude trekking experiences in the Annapurna region.
