This exciting trek combines the legendary Everest Base Camp Trek with the challenging crossing of Cho La Pass (5,420 m) and the breathtaking beauty of the Gokyo Valley, offering you the chance to explore some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Everest region. From towering Himalayan peaks and ancient Sherpa villages to pristine glacial lakes and dramatic mountain passes, every day offers a new and unforgettable experience.

Everest Base Camp with Cho La Pass Trek Overview

Your trip to Everest Base Camp with Chola Pass begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Once you land in Lukla, you will then walk through the heart of the Khumbu region. You will follow trails alongside the Dudh Koshi River, pass through charming mountain villages, cross iconic suspension bridges decorated with colorful prayer flags, and walk through beautiful forests of pine and rhododendron. Along the way, you’ll experience the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people while staying in traditional teahouses and learning about the rich Buddhist culture that has shaped life in the Himalayas for centuries.

As you ascend, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar, the main gateway to the Everest region. From here, the trail continues through Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, where forests gradually give way to towering snow-covered peaks, glaciers, and alpine valleys.

The trek reaches its highest point at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), set beside the Khumbu Glacier at the foot of the world’s highest mountain. After spending time at base camp, you’ll continue to Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the best viewpoint in the Everest region. An early morning hike to the summit offers clear views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks before you begin the return journey.

After Everest Base Camp, the trail leaves the main route and heads toward Cho La Pass. The climb is gradual at first before becoming steeper as you approach the pass. From the top, the route looks across glaciers, rocky ridges, and snow-covered peaks before descending into the Gokyo Valley.

After crossing the pass, you’ll enter the peaceful Gokyo Valley, home to the stunning turquoise Gokyo Lakes. This quieter side of the Everest region offers a completely different experience, with fewer crowds and breathtaking scenery. You’ll also have the opportunity to climb Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), one of Nepal’s finest viewpoints, offering panoramic views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, creating a truly unforgettable Himalayan panorama.

Each day ends at a traditional teahouse, with simple accommodation and freshly prepared meals along the route. The itinerary includes acclimatization days at higher elevations, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude before the next stage of the trek.

The Everest Base Camp with Cho La Pass Trek is best suited to trekkers with a good level of fitness seeking a rewarding high-altitude adventure. The best seasons to undertake this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when clear skies, stable weather, and excellent mountain views provide ideal trekking conditions.

If you’re looking for a trek that combines the iconic Everest Base Camp experience with the adventure of crossing a high Himalayan pass and the beauty of the Gokyo Lakes, the Everest Base Camp with Cho La Pass Trek – 18 Days is an exceptional choice. You’ll experience world-famous mountain landscapes, immerse yourself in Sherpa culture, and create memories that will stay with you long after your journey through the Himalayas comes to an end.

Option 1: Kathmandu to Lukla Flight (Off-Season)

During the winter and monsoon seasons, you can usually take a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The flight takes about 30–35 minutes and offers amazing views of the Himalayan mountains before landing at the famous Tenzing-Hillary Airport.

Option 2: Manthali to Lukla Flight (Peak Season)

During the busy spring and autumn trekking seasons, flights to Lukla usually leave from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap because Kathmandu Airport gets very busy. You’ll leave Kathmandu early in the morning and drive 5–6 hours to Manthali. From there, you’ll take a 20-minute flight to Lukla.

After you arrive in Lukla, you’ll start your trek to Phakding. The trail is mostly downhill and easy to follow. You’ll walk through traditional Sherpa villages, cross suspension bridges, and follow the beautiful Dudh Koshi River. Along the way, you’ll enjoy peaceful mountain scenery, forests, colorful prayer flags, and carved mani walls.

Although this section is challenging, your eyes will be filled with breathtaking mountain scenery. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy your first view of Mount Everest, along with peaks such as Lhotse and Nuptse.

Today is an important acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the higher altitude. Instead of resting all day, you’ll take a short hike to a higher elevation and return to Namche Bazaar. This technique follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, which helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

After breakfast, hike uphill to the famous Hotel Everest View (3,880m), one of the highest-altitude hotels in the world. Along the way, you’ll pass the Everest View Point and, if time permits, visit the nearby Khumjung Village, known for its traditional Sherpa culture and historic monastery.

From here, a steady uphill climb through beautiful forests leads you to the peaceful village of Tengboche. Tengboche is best known for the Tengboche Monastery, the largest and most important Buddhist monastery in the Everest region.

If you arrive at the right time, you may have the opportunity to witness monks performing traditional Buddhist prayers. The monastery, set against the stunning backdrop of Ama Dablam and other snow-capped peaks, is one of the highlights of the Everest Base Camp Trek.

As you ascend, trees become sparse, and the landscape opens up, revealing wide valleys, stone-walled fields, and dramatic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

The trail descends to Debuche and crosses the Imja Khola River before climbing steadily to Pangboche, one of the oldest Sherpa villages in the Everest region. From here, you’ll continue through open hillsides and yak pastures with beautiful views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other Himalayan peaks.

As you climb higher, you’ll notice the scenery becoming harsher and the air getting thinner. By the afternoon, you’ll arrive at Dingboche (4,410 m). Dingboche is a tranquil community encircled by stone walls that shield crops from the harsh mountain winds.

After checking into your teahouse, you can rest and enjoy the quiet mountain atmosphere while preparing for further acclimatization in the days ahead.

You will pass Dughla (Thukla), where the trail becomes steeper. At Thukla Pass, you may take a short break at the memorial area dedicated to climbers who lost their lives in the Everest region. From here, the path continues with a steady uphill climb alongside glaciers and moraine fields.

As you climb higher, the air gets thinner, and the landscape becomes more rugged, with towering peaks all around you. By the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Lobuche (4,910 m), a small mountain settlement beside the Khumbu Glacier.

After arrival, check into your teahouse or lodge, rest, and prepare for the final approach toward Everest Base Camp in the coming days.

It is strongly advised to include additional buffer days in Kathmandu, as the weather in the Himalayas can change rapidly and flights to Tenzing-Hillary Airport are frequently delayed. Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended.

Trekking poles may make long descents considerably easier on the knees, and packing light with appropriate clothing is preferable to lugging heavy gear. Before departing Kathmandu, make sure you have enough Nepalese currency, as ATMs outside Namche Bazaar are unreliable.

Additional information

Trek Difficulty

This trek is not easy, but that’s exactly what makes it special. You’ll be walking for several hours most days, usually between 5 and 8 hours, and the terrain gets tougher as you go higher. The section over Cho La Pass is the most demanding part, especially if there’s snow or strong wind.

You don’t need any climbing skills, but you do need to be reasonably fit and comfortable walking day after day. If you’ve done some hiking or long walks before coming to Nepal, you’ll feel much more prepared once you’re on the trail.

Accommodation

Except for Kathmandu, you will spend all other trekking nights at local teahouses. These are basic mountain lodges run by Sherpa families where you will get warm beds, delicious food, and a place to relax after a long day on the route.

Two people often share a basic room and use communal restrooms. As you rise, the facilities become simpler, but the experience feels more authentic. In the evenings, trekkers gather in the dining hall around the stove to eat and talk about their day’s adventures.

 Acclimatization and Altitude

You’ll cross 4,000 meters on this trek, so you’ll start to feel the altitude, and walking may become harder. That’s why the itinerary includes rest days in places like Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.

Your body will have time to acclimate to the altitude during these rest days. You’ll be able to handle the altitude considerably better if you walk gently, stay hydrated, and don’t hurry. Additionally, your guide will monitor your progress and adjust the pace as needed.

Meals

Food on the trail is more varied than most people expect. You’ll eat traditional Dal Bhat, as well as noodles, soups, fried rice, pasta, eggs, potatoes, and sometimes pancakes.

As you go higher, the menu becomes more limited, but you’ll still get enough to stay full and energized. Hot drinks like tea, coffee, and lemon-ginger-honey are easy to find and quickly become part of your daily routine.

Best Time to Trek

The best time for the Everest Base Camp with Cho La Pass Trek is spring or autumn. From March to May, the trails are full of blooming rhododendrons, and the weather is usually steady. From September to November, the air is clear, and you get strong, wide views of the Himalayas.

Winter is very cold, and Cho La Pass can be difficult to cross due to snow. The monsoon months bring rain, cloudy skies, and poor visibility, so trekking is less enjoyable during that period.

Permits

Before you enter the Everest region, you’ll need two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit.

If you’re trekking with a company, they usually arrange everything for you, so you don’t have to deal with any paperwork during the trek.

Internet, Electricity, and Mobile Network

You won’t be completely disconnected, but your connection will be limited. Many teahouses offer Wi-Fi and charging for a small fee, though it gets slower and less reliable the higher you go.

Mobile signal works in some villages, but not everywhere. A power bank will come in handy during the trek.

Drinking Water

Safe drinking water is available throughout the trek, but it’s always boiled or treated. You can refill your bottle at teahouses or use purification tablets if needed.

A reusable bottle is the easiest way to stay hydrated and also helps reduce plastic waste in the mountains.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is important for this trek. Make sure it covers high-altitude trekking up to at least 5,500 meters and includes helicopter evacuation.

It may feel like just a formality, but in a remote place like Everest, it can make a big difference if something goes wrong.

Responsible Trekking

Although the Everest region is stunning, it is extremely delicate. Here, little things make a big difference. Take your trash with you, avoid single-use plastic whenever possible, and show consideration for local traditions and institutions.

Staying in local teahouses and buying locally made goods also helps the communities that live in these mountains. Trekking here supports their way of life, and your choices help keep the region clean and welcoming for future trekkers.

Unforgettable Trekking Experience & Warmest Hospitality with Silvermoon Adventure Silvermoon Adventure and Tours provides comprehensive, reliable, and top-tier service, treating every guest with genuine warmth and care. They truly make Nepal feel like a second home, and trekking with them means you won't need to worry about a single detail from start to finish. Why I Chose Silvermoon Adventure and Tours I learned about the team through Deepak. Once he knew my flight details and preferred trek, he immediately customized a detailed itinerary for me. While I consulted other travel agencies in Nepal, Deepak and the Silvermoon team provided the most thorough plan and transparent information, giving me complete confidence to book with them. The Trekking Experience My guide, Basanta, took exceptional care of me throughout the entire journey. Along the trail, he constantly checked in on how I was feeling, offered breaks, and even offered to carry my backpack to ensure I was comfortable. Every time we arrived at a tea house, he made sure I had food and drinks ready—even reminding me to order meals when I was too exhausted to think about it. On the day we reached Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), I developed a mild headache. Basanta immediately arranged garlic soup to help relieve the altitude sickness and provided medicine to soothe the pain. His attentive care made all the difference in completing the trek safely. Beyond his attentiveness, Basanta is an expert guide who always navigated the easiest paths at trail junctions. Even after we returned to Pokhara for dinner, he ensured I got back to my hotel safely. Deepak also checked in via message every single day during the trek to ensure everything was running smoothly. After the Trek The team's hospitality didn't end on the trail. Back in Kathmandu, the founder, Bishal, gave me a warm welcome, helped me retrieve my luggage from the hotel, showed me around the city, and personally arranged my airport drop-off. Thank you to Basanta, Bishal, and Deepak for an unforgettable experience. I will definitely return to Nepal and trek with Silvermoon Adventure and Tours again. Highly recommended!

Excellent guide and wonderful experience My husband and I had the most amazing experience trekking in the Himalayas to Poonhill with Bishal. We were very well looked after and felt extremely safe with him at all times. He made us laugh when the hike got a little trickier and always made sure we had hot drinks and food as soon as we got to the huts. We would highly recommend him as a wonderful and trustworthy guide and will definitely contact him again when we have plans to come back!
