Trip Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp with Mardi Himal Trek is one of Nepal’s most rewarding Himalayan journeys, combining two very different but beautifully connected trekking routes. The Mardi Himal section offers quiet ridgelines, forest trails, and close-up mountain views. In contrast, the Annapurna Base Camp trail takes you deep into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the region. Together, they create an 12-day trek that feels varied, balanced, and visually rich from start to finish.

The trip starts in Kathmandu, travels to Pokhara, and then progressively enters the Annapurna region’s highlands and villages. You go past terraced farmlands, lush rhododendron and bamboo woods, and traditional Gurung communities. Warm green lowlands give way to alpine ridges, and finally to high-altitude landscapes dominated by snow, rock, and glaciers as the route ascends. Important highlights are Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) and Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), both of which provide radically different but no less potent mountain experiences.

The climb to Mardi Himal Base Camp is the kind of memory that stays with you long after the trek is over. You leave sunrise before, moving quietly through the cold, half-awake darkness with only the sound of boots against the trail. At first, everything feels still and distant. But little by little, the sky begins to change.

As you climb higher, the first sunlight slowly touches Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range. The snowy peaks change color little by little, from dull grey to golden, then soft orange as the morning light spreads across the mountains. The air is cold, the wind cuts through your jacket, and the trail keeps rising, but somehow none of it matters when you look around. There’s a calmness up there that’s hard to explain, no traffic, no noise, no distractions. You will witness the mountains opening up in front of you and the quiet feeling of watching a new day begin in the Himalayas.

Later, you will head towards the Annapurna Base Camp. The trip to Annapurna Base Camp significantly alters the environment. The trail goes into a huge glacier basin surrounded by towering Himalayan giants rather than ridgelines and far-off vistas. Peaks like Annapurna South, Machapuchare, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna I rise sharply from all sides, giving the impression that you are in the middle of the Himalayas.

Jhinu Danda is an important stop on the trek because it gives trekkers a chance to rest after long days of walking. The natural hot springs beside the Modi Khola River help relax tired muscles and offer a peaceful break before continuing the journey.

Annapurna Base Camp with Mardi Himal Trek overview

This trek is considered moderately challenging and is suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and a love for mountain landscapes. It’s not just about reaching the base camps, but it’s everything that happens along the way.

The combination of Mardi Himal’s ridge walking and Annapurna Base Camp’s dramatic glacier basin makes this itinerary especially unique. It offers both isolation and grandeur, challenge and comfort, cultural encounters and pure wilderness. Few treks in Nepal manage to bring so many contrasts together in such a natural flow. Whether you’re there for photography, adventure, or to experience life in the mountains of Nepal, the journey feels full at every step. It’s the kind of trek that stays with you long after you’ve left the trail behind.

When you are ready, this trail is waiting, offering not just a destination, but a full journey through some of the most beautiful mountains in the world.

As you start trekking, the trail gradually ascends through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and bamboo. In spring, the forests bloom with vibrant red and pink rhododendron flowers, creating one of Nepal’s most beautiful trekking trails.

As you continue ascending deeper into the forest, the atmosphere becomes peaceful and distant. The sounds of birds, flowing streams, and rustling leaves accompany your journey toward Forest Camp.

Forest Camp, also called Kokar, is a quiet settlement surrounded by dense woodland. This spot is perfect for a relaxing stop during the trek and also has the thali-style food.

  • Day 04 Trek to High Camp.

Today’s journey is one of the most scenic sections of the Mardi Himal Trek. After breakfast, you will continue trekking uphill through dense rhododendron and moss-covered forests toward Low Camp and Badal Danda. The peaceful forest trail gradually opens up as the elevation increases, revealing wider views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Along the way, the striking pyramid-shaped Machhapuchhre dominates the skyline, while Annapurna South and Hiunchuli rise prominently in the distance.

The trail feels entirely different after passing Badal Danda. The trail opens onto long mountain ranges with limitless vistas on both sides as the trees gradually fade into the distance behind you. There are moments when the clouds are well below the route, giving the impression that you are traveling above the actual world. With rocky slopes, alpine pastures, and the snow-covered Himalayas extending over the horizon, the scenery grows more untamed and expansive with each step up.

The walk toward High Camp is one of those sections you do not want to end. The trail follows narrow ridges with huge mountain views in every direction, and the closer you get, the more dramatic the scenery becomes. By the time you finally arrive at High Camp, surrounded by towering peaks and cold mountain air, the place feels isolated in the best possible way.

As evening approaches, the mountains slowly change color. Warm golden light touches Machapuchare and the Annapurna range while the sky begins to darken behind them. Sitting there and watching the sunset from High Camp feels less like a stop on a trek and more like a moment you will remember long after the journey ends.

    Overnight in High Camp.

    • Max. Altitude: 2,600m (8,530 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is the most exciting and physically demanding day of the trek. Before sunrise, you will begin the steep ascent toward Mardi Himal Viewpoint. Once you reach the viewpoint, you will wait for the sunrise with patience and excitement.

As the first golden light slowly illuminates Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the surrounding snow-covered peaks, you will witness one of the most spectacular Himalayan sunrises in Nepal. The panoramic mountain scenery from the viewpoint feels incredibly stunning.

At around 4,500 meters, you will resume the slow ascent toward Mardi Himal Base Camp after enjoying the dawn and capturing the moments. The path offers amazing up-close views of Mardi Himal, Annapurna I, and the famous fishtail-shaped Machhapuchhre as it winds through a steep, high-altitude trail.

The mountain scenery near base camp is raw, vast, and unforgettable, with rocky ridges, high-altitude landscapes, and glaciers surrounding the area. After spending some time at base camp for rest and photography, you will descend carefully back to High Camp before continuing downhill toward Forest Camp.

    Overnight in Forest Camp.

    • Max. Altitude: 4,500m (14,764 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours trek

  • Day 06 Trek to Chhomrong.

Today’s route connects the Mardi Himal trail with the classic Annapurna Base Camp trail. The trail descends steadily through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests, then passes traditional villages and terraced agricultural landscapes.

As you descend more, the scenery changes from isolated forest trails to more populated villages with terraced farmland, stone pathways, and small local tea houses scattered along the route.

The journey passes through several rural settlements where daily mountain life can be observed up close, with farmers working the terraces and traditional stone houses lining the hillsides. The route offers occasional mountain views, especially of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South, which remain visible throughout much of the day.

By afternoon, you will arrive at Chhomrong, one of the largest and most important villages along the Annapurna Sanctuary route. The village sits beautifully on a hillside facing Annapurna South and Machapuchare.

The Gurung community of Chhomrong is known for warm hospitality and strong cultural traditions. The village offers spectacular sunset views and an authentic Himalayan atmosphere.

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours trek

  • Day 07 Trek to the Himalaya.

After breakfast, you will trek towards the Himalaya. From Chhomrong, the trail descends steeply via long stone staircases to the Chhomrong Khola, then crosses and begins a steady uphill climb toward Sinuwa. This part of the trek is physically demanding, with a continuous up-and-down trail that quickly transitions from open hillside villages into dense forested slopes.

After leaving Sinuwa behind, the trail slowly pulls you away from the busy villages and into a quieter part of the mountains. The sound of the river follows beside you as the path winds through thick bamboo and rhododendron forests, where the air feels cooler, and the sunlight only occasionally breaks through the trees. Wooden bridges sway over fast-moving streams, waterfalls spill down the cliffs around you, and some sections of the trail cling tightly to the mountainside, making the walk feel both peaceful and adventurous at the same time.

You start to notice how the valley is changing as you pass by little stops like Bamboo, Dovan, and Himalaya. The route becomes more obscure deep in the forest as the mountains grow closer and the cliffs grow steeper. You get a stronger sense that you are moving deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary and away from the outer world with each step.

    Overnight at Himalaya.

    • Max. Altitude: 2,920 meters (9,580 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours trek

  • Day 08 Trek to Annapurna Base Camp.

Today is another unforgettable highlight of the entire journey. From Himalaya, the trail climbs steadily through Deurali and the Hinku Cave area, following the narrow Modi Khola valley deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary. The forest gradually fades away, and the scenery becomes more open, with rocky slopes, river crossings, and cliffs on both sides of the trail.

You will first arrive at Machapuchare Base Camp, where the views suddenly open up in every direction. From here, the surrounding peaks feel much closer, with Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range dominating the skyline. After a short break, the trail continues gently upward toward Annapurna Base Camp.

The last view of Annapurna Base Camp is just amazing. When you get there, the tall peaks of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre surround you in a natural amphitheater. With no doubt, this is one of Nepal’s most powerful and exquisite Himalaya experiences where the scenery feels vast, silent, and overwhelming.

    Overnight at Annapurna Base Camp.

    • Max. Altitude: 4,130 meters (13,550 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours trek

  • Day 09 Trek down to Dovan.

You wake early at Annapurna Base Camp to watch the sunrise over Annapurna I and the surrounding peaks, when the entire sanctuary slowly turns golden and bright.

After breakfast, you begin the descent, retracing the trail back through Machapuchare Base Camp, Deurali, Himalaya, and Dovan.

By the time you reach Dovan, the air feels warmer and thicker, and the bamboo and rhododendron forests return. The sound of the river grows louder, marking the transition from high-altitude wilderness back into the lower valley.

    Overnight at Dovan.

    • Max. Altitude: 2,505 meters (9,348 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours trek

  • Day 10 Trek to Jhinu Danda and drive to Pokhara.

The final trekking day continues from the forested trail down toward Chhomrong, followed by a long descent of stone steps to the Modi Khola valley. From Chhomrong, you continue toward Jhinu Danda, a quiet hillside village known for its natural hot springs. After several days on the trail, this is where most trekkers stop to soak their tired legs in warm, mineral-rich water.

After lunch and some rest, you will drive back to Pokhara by shared jeep. The journey takes you fully out of the mountains and back into the lakeside city. Once you reach Pokhara, you will drive to your hotel, where you will rest for the remainder of the day. Also, if you feel light and fresh, then you can stroll around the lakeside in the evening.

    Overnight at Pokhara.

    • Meals: Breakfast (Lunch depending on the schedule)

Trip notes

Before leaving Pokhara, withdraw enough Nepali cash since there are no ATMs along the trek. Carry a reusable water bottle, as teahouses provide filtered drinking water for a small fee. Mobile networks work in many villages but become weaker at higher altitudes, and some lodges offer Wi-Fi for an extra charge.

The weather in the mountains can change quickly so that guides may adjust the itinerary for safety. As you move through the villages and trails, respecting local culture and keeping the mountains clean becomes part of the experience. Tipping guides and porters is common, though always optional.

Additional information

Trekking Permits

We’ll arrange the permits you need for the Annapurna trek, including the ACAP and TIMS (or the registration required at the time of your trek).

Please keep your original passport with you during the trek. You may be asked to show it at some of the checkpoints along the way.

Fitness and Trek Preparation

The trek is rated moderate, but you should still be prepared for some tough days. Most days involve several hours of walking, including uphill climbs, descents, stone steps, and rough or uneven trails.

You do not need previous high-altitude trekking experience, but being comfortable with long walks will make the trek much more enjoyable. Regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, and basic cardiovascular exercise before the trip are good ways to prepare.

The early-morning hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp and the days around Annapurna Base Camp are the more demanding parts of the route. Take your time, keep a steady pace, and let your guide know if you feel unwell.

Altitude and Acclimatization

Mardi Himal Base Camp is the highest point of the trek, at around 4,500 meters. Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 meters. At this altitude, the air is thinner, so take it slow and give yourself time to adjust.

Take your time while walking and drink water regularly. Make sure you eat well and get enough rest. If you have a headache, feel dizzy or sick, become unusually tired, or have trouble breathing, let your guide know straight away. Don’t try to push through these symptoms.

Your guide will monitor the group throughout the trek and adjust the pace or itinerary as needed. Anyone with concerns about high-altitude travel should speak with a doctor before starting the trek.

Weather and Trekking Conditions

Mountain weather can change quickly, even during the best trekking seasons. Mornings may be clear and sunny while clouds, wind, or rain arrive later in the day. Temperatures also drop considerably after sunset, particularly at higher elevations.

Spring and autumn are usually the best times to do this trek. From March to May, the weather gets warmer, and the rhododendrons are in bloom. September to November is also a good time, with generally clear weather and better mountain views.

The monsoon months can bring rain, muddy trails, and reduced mountain visibility. Winter is much colder, and snow can occur on the higher sections of the route.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara is provided in standard tourist-category hotels on a twin-sharing basis. During the trek, you will stay in locally operated teahouses and lodges.

Rooms in the mountains are simple and comfortable, but facilities become more basic as you gain altitude. Bathrooms may be shared, and hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities are generally available only for an additional charge.

Accommodation can be busy during the spring and autumn seasons, so rooms are arranged based on availability along the trail.

Meals and Drinking Water

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included during the trekking days. Teahouses serve a variety of simple meals, including dal bhat, noodles, rice, pasta, soups, vegetables, eggs, potatoes, and other local and international options.

Dal bhat is a popular choice among trekkers because it is filling and provides a good source of energy for long walking days.

Teahouses offer filtered or treated drinking water for an additional fee. Bring a reusable bottle or hydration system and consider carrying a suitable water purification method for the trek.

Electricity, Charging and Wi-Fi

Most teahouses have electricity, but there may only be a few charging points, particularly when the lodge is busy. Some teahouses also charge a small amount to charge phones, cameras, or power banks.

Some teahouses offer Wi-Fi, but the connection can be slow or unreliable, especially at higher elevations. Mobile network coverage also varies along the trail.

A power bank is strongly recommended, especially if you plan to use your phone or camera regularly.

Cash and Personal Expenses

It’s a good idea to get enough Nepali cash in Pokhara before the trek starts. There may not be any working ATMs along the trail, so keep some cash with you for things like hot showers, charging your phone, Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, and other expenses that aren’t covered in the package.

Keeping some extra cash is a good idea in case the itinerary changes or you need to make an unexpected purchase.

Porter and Baggage

One porter is provided for every two trekkers. Your porter will carry your main trekking luggage, while you carry a smaller daypack with what you need during the day.

Keep your passport, cash, medicines, camera, electronics, water, and other important things in your daypack. Try not to bring more than you need. A lighter bag will make things easier for both you and your porter.

Your trekking company will provide the applicable baggage weight guidelines before departure.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for this trek. Make sure your policy covers trekking at the maximum altitude included in your itinerary and provides coverage for medical treatment and emergency evacuation if required.

Read the policy carefully before purchasing it, particularly the sections covering high-altitude trekking, medical evacuation, and trip interruption.

Safety and Emergency Support

Your guide will accompany you throughout the route and monitor weather, trail conditions, altitude, and the group’s overall condition.

If you get sick or injured during the trek, our team will help arrange the care you need. Depending on the situation, we may need to change the trekking plan, take you to a lower altitude, or arrange an evacuation.

The itinerary may be adjusted if weather, trail conditions, health concerns, or other circumstances make it unsafe to continue as planned.

What to Pack

Pack according to the season, but the following items are useful for this trek:

  • Comfortable trekking boots with good grip
  • Trekking trousers and lightweight hiking clothes
  • Thermal base layers
  • Fleece or warm insulated jacket
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket
  • Warm hat, gloves, and sun hat
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Power bank and charging cables
  • Personal toiletries and basic medication
  • Small first-aid kit
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions
  • Trekking poles
  • Comfortable daypack
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Travel insurance details
  • Some Nepali cash for personal expenses

Your guide or trekking company can advise you on whether you need additional equipment based on the season and current trail conditions.

Responsible Trekking

The Annapurna region is home to local communities, forests, rivers, wildlife, and culturally important sites. Please respect local customs and traditions as you pass through the villages.

Please don’t leave rubbish along the trail. Carry a reusable water bottle if you can and use the waste bins or disposal points available along the way. If you want to take someone’s photo, especially local people, ask them first.

Small actions make a real difference in keeping the trails and villages clean for the communities who live here and for the trekkers who come after you.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Nepal’s trekking industry and is a common way to thank guides and porters for their hard work. There is no fixed amount, and it is ultimately your personal choice.

Many trekkers tip at the end of the trek based on the level of service they received, the length of the trek, and their overall experience with the trekking team.

Itinerary Changes

The itinerary provides a planned route and schedule, but trekking in the Himalayas always involves some flexibility. Weather, trail conditions, landslides, health concerns, transportation delays, or accommodation availability can occasionally affect the original plan.

Your guide and trekking company will make any necessary adjustments with safety as the priority. Minor changes to walking times, overnight stops, or transportation arrangements may therefore occur during the trip.

Best Time to Trek

The most favorable months for the Annapurna Base Camp with Mardi Himal Trek are March to May and September to November.

March to May: Warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and colorful forests make this a particularly beautiful time to trek.

June to August: This is the monsoon period. Rain, clouds, muddy trails, and reduced mountain visibility are more common.

September to November: Generally stable weather, clear mountain views, and comfortable daytime temperatures make autumn one of the most popular trekking seasons.

December to February: Cold temperatures are common, especially at night and at higher elevations. Snow may affect the upper sections of the route.

A few things to keep in mind

Mountain trekking is different from traveling in the cities. Facilities become more basic as you go higher, weather can change without much warning, and a day that looks short on paper can feel longer depending on the trail and your pace.

Come prepared, listen to your guide, and give yourself time to enjoy the villages, forests, ridgelines, and mountain views along the way. The trek isn’t only about reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp; much of the experience comes from everything you encounter along the way.

Unforgettable Trekking Experience & Warmest Hospitality with Silvermoon Adventure Silvermoon Adventure and Tours provides comprehensive, reliable, and top-tier service, treating every guest with genuine warmth and care. They truly make Nepal feel like a second home, and trekking with them means you won't need to worry about a single detail from start to finish. Why I Chose Silvermoon Adventure and Tours I learned about the team through Deepak. Once he knew my flight details and preferred trek, he immediately customized a detailed itinerary for me. While I consulted other travel agencies in Nepal, Deepak and the Silvermoon team provided the most thorough plan and transparent information, giving me complete confidence to book with them. The Trekking Experience My guide, Basanta, took exceptional care of me throughout the entire journey. Along the trail, he constantly checked in on how I was feeling, offered breaks, and even offered to carry my backpack to ensure I was comfortable. Every time we arrived at a tea house, he made sure I had food and drinks ready—even reminding me to order meals when I was too exhausted to think about it. On the day we reached Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), I developed a mild headache. Basanta immediately arranged garlic soup to help relieve the altitude sickness and provided medicine to soothe the pain. His attentive care made all the difference in completing the trek safely. Beyond his attentiveness, Basanta is an expert guide who always navigated the easiest paths at trail junctions. Even after we returned to Pokhara for dinner, he ensured I got back to my hotel safely. Deepak also checked in via message every single day during the trek to ensure everything was running smoothly. After the Trek The team's hospitality didn't end on the trail. Back in Kathmandu, the founder, Bishal, gave me a warm welcome, helped me retrieve my luggage from the hotel, showed me around the city, and personally arranged my airport drop-off. Thank you to Basanta, Bishal, and Deepak for an unforgettable experience. I will definitely return to Nepal and trek with Silvermoon Adventure and Tours again. Highly recommended!

Excellent guide and wonderful experience My husband and I had the most amazing experience trekking in the Himalayas to Poonhill with Bishal. We were very well looked after and felt extremely safe with him at all times. He made us laugh when the hike got a little trickier and always made sure we had hot drinks and food as soon as we got to the huts. We would highly recommend him as a wonderful and trustworthy guide and will definitely contact him again when we have plans to come back!
