Trip Overview

The Mardi Himal Trek is a beautiful short trekking journey in the Annapurna region that offers a perfect balance of nature, culture, and Himalayan adventure. It is ideal for those who want to experience the mountains without walking on overly crowded trails. From the very beginning, the journey takes you through changing landscapes, from busy city life to peaceful lakeside towns and then into quiet mountain paths surrounded by nature.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, where you can get a firsthand look at the native way of life, winding alleyways, and historic temples. From here, a lovely drive leads to Pokhara, a laid-back, charming city on the shores of the well-known Phewa Lake. Before the hike begins, Pokhara offers a serene introduction to the highlands, with vistas of snow-capped peaks reflected in the river.

Mardi Himal Trek Route

As the trek starts from Kande, the trail gradually climbs through small villages, terraced farmlands, and dense forests filled with rhododendron and oak trees. The peaceful rhythm of nature and the clean mountain air gradually replace the sounds of city life. Every day is a gradual climb that lets your body acclimate while the view gets more striking.

The forest gives way to expansive ridgelines and alpine scenery as you ascend. As you start to see tall peaks like Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli rising beyond the horizon, the vistas are more and more stunning. The experience is more intimate and immersive, as the path itself is serene and less crowded than on other well-known hikes.

Most trekkers still remember this remarkable experience long after the journey is over.

The descent brings a different perspective, as you walk back through forests and villages. Later, you will return to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu, which will conclude your trek.

Overall, the Mardi Himal Trek is not just about reaching a destination. Still, it is about the experience of walking through a blend of natural beauty, cultural encounters, and the peaceful charm of the Himalayas of the Annapurna Region.

  • Day 05 Trek to High Camp.

You begin the morning by leaving Forest Camp behind and traveling uphill through peaceful oak and rhododendron forests. For a time, the route seems steady, green, and serene, much as it has been over the past few days.

As you go higher, the surroundings start to change. The trees become fewer, the temperature drops, and the views begin to widen. When you arrive in Badal Danda (Cloud Hill) for lunch, the scenery has already changed significantly. If the weather is favorable, clouds will appear underneath you, resembling a white ocean. Also, you will witness the massive Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) Mountain standing right in front of you so close.

After lunch, the real push begins. You will cross the 3,000-meter mark, and the ascent starts to feel more real. The trail gets narrower and more visible. The lush greenery gradually changes to dry, open slopes and a rougher, higher-altitude landscape.

Although there are a few steep spots that may challenge your stamina, the scenery always draws you back in. The mountains are calmer and seem larger up here. Once you reach High Camp, you will be surrounded by untainted mountain beauty.

    Overnight in High Camp.

    • Max. Altitude: 3,580m (11,745 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 4-5 hours trek

  • Day 06 Early in the morning, hike to View point- 4,200m, Mardi Base Camp 4,500m, and trek down to Low Camp 3,035m.

Today, you have to wake up early, around 2 hours before sunrise. The trail climbs straight up from High Camp, narrow and a bit rough, and you can feel the altitude almost immediately.

By the time you reach the Viewpoint at around 4,200 meters, the light begins to touch the mountains. And suddenly, Machhapuchhre is right in front of you, glowing in the morning light. It doesn’t feel far away at all. Machhapuchhre catches the first light, sharp, glowing, almost unreal. No photo really captures that exact moment. Behind and around it, the peaks of the Annapurna range stretch out, quiet and massive. It’s quiet, cold, and somehow very still, like the mountains are just there, doing their own thing, and you’re lucky to be watching.

The trail gets increasingly wide and exposed as you proceed near Mardi Base Camp. You are now surrounded by nothing but rock and sky, with no trees or shade. It’s not a crowded or populated area. No crowd, no large sign. Just a vast, untamed area encircled by mountains.

You will get a chance to play with the snow, capture the moments in your photos or videos, and in a while, you will return to High Camp. You will have a decent breakfast at High Camp, then continue descending to Low Camp.

The descent to Low Camp is long. At first, it’s the same dry, open terrain, but step by step, the landscape softens, the mountains feel a little farther away, and the trail brings you back into green hills and trees.

Reaching Low Camp feels lighter, but there’s a heaviness in the heart as you have left the massive mountains behind.

    Overnight in Low Camp.

    • Max. Altitude: 4,500m (14,764 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours trek

  • Day 07 Trek down to Siding village and drive to Pokhara.

It is the last day of the trek, and there’s no early rush today, no big climb ahead, just the way down.

After leaving Low Camp, you begin to descend through the jungle. The air feels warmer, the trees surround the trail, and the mountains gradually disappear from view behind you with each step. The walk down to Siding village takes a few hours, mostly downhill, and involves stone steps.

You will reach Siding in a few hours and take a jeep drive to Pokhara. In about an hour, you will reach Pokhara and rest for the remainder of the day. Pokhara comes alive at night, so you might want to stroll around the city’s famous spots like Lakeside in the evening.

    Overnight at Pokhara.

    • Max. Altitude: 1,750 meters (5,741 feet)

    • Accommodation: Teahouse or Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Drive duration: 2 hours’ drive

    • Trek Duration: 3-4 hours trek

  • Day 08 Drive to Kathmandu by tourist bus

After breakfast, you will head back to Kathmandu by tourist bus. The drive once again offers scenic views of rivers, hills, and rural life.

Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy your final evening in Nepal. Also, you may want to explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax, look through the photos you shot during the trek on your camera, and admire the scenery.

    Overnight in Kathmandu.

    • Accommodation: Standard Hotel

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Drive duration: 6-7 hours’ drive

  • Day 09 Departure

Your trek comes to an end today. You will leave Nepal with unforgettable memories of mountain landscapes, cultural encounters, and a truly unique trekking experience.

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a final walk or some last-minute shopping.

    • Meals: Breakfast (Lunch depending on the schedule)

Additional information

Trekking Permits

We’ll arrange the necessary permits and registrations required for the Mardi Himal Trek, including the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS or the applicable registration at the time of your trek.

Please keep your original passport with you during the trek. You may need to show it at checkpoints along the route.

Fitness and Trek Preparation

The Mardi Himal Trek is rated moderate, but you should be prepared for several hours of walking each day. The trail includes uphill climbs, downhill sections, stone steps, forest paths, narrow ridges, and uneven terrain.

Previous trekking experience is not required, but being comfortable with long walks will make the trek more enjoyable. Regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, and basic cardiovascular exercise before the trip are good ways to prepare.

The climb from Forest Camp to High Camp is one of the harder parts of the trek. The early-morning walk toward Mardi Himal Base Camp can also be tiring. Walk at a steady pace and take breaks when needed. If you feel unwell, tell your guide.

Altitude and Acclimatization

Mardi Himal Base Camp is the highest point of the trek at around 4,500 meters. Above 3,000 meters, the air becomes thinner, and your body needs time to adjust.

Walk at a steady pace, drink water regularly, eat properly, and get enough rest. If you get a headache, feel dizzy or sick, become unusually tired, or have trouble breathing, tell your guide. If symptoms worsen, stop walking and tell your guide.

Your guide will monitor the group throughout the trek and can adjust the pace or itinerary if needed. Anyone with concerns about high-altitude travel should speak with a doctor before starting the trek.

Weather and Trekking Conditions

Mountain weather can change quickly, especially at higher elevations. The morning may be clear, but clouds, wind, or rain can come in later. High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp are much colder than the lower parts of the trail, so you’ll need warm clothes.

Spring and autumn are usually the best times for the trek. March to May has warmer weather and the rhododendron forests are in bloom. September to November usually brings clear mountain views and good walking conditions.

The monsoon months can bring rain, muddy trails, clouds, and reduced visibility. Winter is much colder, and snow may affect the higher sections of the route.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara is provided in standard tourist-category hotels on a twin-sharing basis. During the trek, you will stay in locally operated teahouses and lodges.

Mountain rooms are simple and comfortable, with basic facilities. Bathrooms may be shared, particularly at higher elevations. Hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities may be available for an additional fee.

Accommodation at High Camp and other remote sections of the trail is more basic than in the lower villages. During spring and autumn, teahouses can also get busy, so rooms are arranged based on availability.

Meals and Drinking Water

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included during the trekking days. Teahouses serve simple and filling meals such as dal bhat, noodles, rice, pasta, soups, vegetables, eggs, potatoes, and other local and international dishes.

Dal bhat is a popular choice among trekkers as it provides a filling meal and a good source of energy for long walking days.

Teahouses along the main trail usually offer drinking water for an additional fee. There are sections where reliable water sources may not be available between settlements, so carry enough water with you during the day’s walk.

A reusable water bottle or hydration pack is recommended. You can also carry water purification tablets, a filter, or another suitable purification method.

Electricity, Charging and Wi-Fi

Most teahouses have access to electricity, although charging facilities may be limited. Some lodges charge an additional fee for charging phones, cameras, or power banks.

Wi-Fi may be available at some teahouses, but the connection can be slow or unreliable, especially at higher elevations. Mobile network coverage also varies along the trail.

A power bank is strongly recommended if you plan to use your phone or camera regularly.

Cash and Personal Expenses

Carry enough Nepali cash before starting the trek. You may not find a reliable ATM along the Mardi Himal route. It is best to withdraw or exchange the money you need in Pokhara or Kathmandu before heading into the mountains.

You may need cash for hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, and other personal expenses that are not included in the package.

We recommend keeping extra cash for unexpected expenses or itinerary changes.

Porter and Baggage

We provide one porter for every two trekkers. Your porter will carry your main trekking luggage, while you carry a smaller daypack with the items you need during the day.

Keep your passport, cash, medicines, water, camera, electronics, and other important belongings in your daypack. Try to bring only what you need, as a lighter load makes the trek easier for both you and your porter.

Your trekking company will provide the applicable baggage weight guidelines before departure.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Mardi Himal Trek. Make sure your policy covers trekking at the maximum altitude included in your itinerary and provides coverage for medical treatment and emergency evacuation if required.

Read the policy carefully before purchasing it, particularly the sections covering high-altitude trekking, medical evacuation, and trip interruption.

Safety and Emergency Support

Your guide will accompany you throughout the trek and monitor weather, trail conditions, altitude, and the group’s overall condition.

If you become sick or injured during the trek, our team will help arrange the necessary care. Depending on the situation, you may need to descend to a lower altitude, change the trekking plan, or arrange an evacuation.

The itinerary may be adjusted if weather, trail conditions, health concerns, or other circumstances make it unsafe to continue as planned.

What to Pack

Pack according to the season, but the following items are useful for the Mardi Himal Trek:

  • Comfortable trekking boots with good grip
  • Trekking trousers and lightweight hiking clothes
  • Thermal base layers
  • Fleece or warm insulated jacket
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket
  • Warm hat, gloves, and sun hat
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Water purification tablets or filter
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Power bank and charging cables
  • Personal toiletries and basic medication
  • Small first-aid kit
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions
  • Trekking poles
  • Comfortable daypack
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Travel insurance details
  • Some Nepali cash for personal expenses

Your guide or trekking company can advise you on whether you need additional equipment based on the season and current trail conditions.

Responsible Trekking

The Mardi Himal trail passes through forests, mountain settlements, and natural areas that are home to local communities and wildlife. Please respect local customs and traditions as you pass through the villages.

Avoid leaving rubbish along the trail and use the waste bins or disposal points available in the villages and teahouses. Carrying a reusable water bottle can also help reduce plastic waste.

If you want to photograph local people, ask for permission first. Please also avoid disturbing wildlife, damaging plants, or leaving the established trail unnecessarily.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Nepal’s trekking industry and is a common way to thank guides and porters for their work. There is no fixed amount, and tipping is ultimately a personal choice.

Many trekkers tip at the end of the trek based on the level of service they received, the trek’s length, and their overall experience with the trekking team.

Itinerary Changes

The trekking plan may change depending on mountain conditions. Weather, snow, landslides, trail conditions, health problems, transport delays, or a lack of accommodation can affect the schedule. For this reason, the actual itinerary may be different from the original plan.

Your guide and trekking company will make any necessary adjustments with safety as the priority. Minor changes to walking times, overnight stops, or transportation arrangements may therefore occur during the trip.

Best Time to Trek

The most favorable months for the Mardi Himal Trek are March to May and September to November.

March to May: Warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and clearer mountain views make spring a particularly good time to trek.

June to August: This is the monsoon period. Rain, muddy trails, clouds, and reduced mountain visibility are more common. The higher sections can also become more challenging in wet conditions.

September to November: Generally stable weather, clear mountain views, and comfortable daytime temperatures make autumn one of the most popular trekking seasons.

December to February: Temperatures are colder, particularly at night and at higher elevations. Snow may affect the trail around High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp so that you may need extra preparation.

A few things to keep in mind

Mountain trekking differs from city travel. Facilities become more basic as you move higher, weather can change without much warning, and a short distance on the itinerary can take longer depending on the terrain and your pace.

The section above High Camp is more exposed than the forested parts of the trail, with limited shelter from wind and weather. Start early on the Mardi Himal Base Camp hike and follow your guide’s advice on conditions.

Come prepared and follow your guide’s advice during the trek. Do not rush through the walking days. Take time to enjoy the forests, ridgelines, villages, and mountain views along the way. Reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp is one part of the trek, but there is plenty to see on the trail as well.

The trek is generally rated as easy to moderate. The main challenge comes from steep uphill sections and increasing altitude near High Camp and Mardi Himal Viewpoint.

  • What is the hardest part of the Mardi Himal Trek?

It’s the morning hike from High Camp to Mardi Himal Viewpoint, and it is considered the physically demanding section of the trek. The trail is steep, and the altitude rises rapidly. You will reach up to approx. 3,580m to 4,500m.

  • How many hours do you walk each day?

On the Mardi Himal Trek, you usually walk about 4–7 hours a day, with the viewpoint day often taking 6–8 hours.

  • Do I need previous trekking experience?

No. The Mardi Himal Trek is suitable for first-time trekkers who are reasonably fit and prepared.

  • Is there a lot of uphill walking?

The highest point is Mardi Himal Viewpoint, located at approximately 4,500 meters above sea level.

Mountain View

  • Which mountains can I see from the Mardi Himal Trek?

  • How much cash should I carry?

It’s hard to tell, but you should definitely carry between $30 to $40 USD (approx. 4,000 to 5,500 NPR) per person, per day. This could cover accommodation, meals, drinks, charging fees, Wi-Fi, and personal expenses.

Always keep some additional cash on hand. This means that you can handle unforeseen charges, such as emergency jeep rentals from the finish line, additional rest days due to inclement weather, or small medical supplies.

  • Are there ATMs on the trekking route?

No, there are no ATMs along the Mardi Himal walking path. The final reliable ATMs are in Pokhara, before you begin the trip.

  • Do prices increase at higher elevations?

Indeed, the higher you go on the Mardi Himal Trek, the more expensive it gets. By the time you get to High Camp (3,550 meters), the price of the same products will have doubled or even tripled.

  • Which is better, Mardi Himal or Annapurna Base Camp?

Mardi Himal is better for trekkers seeking shorter itineraries, quieter trails, and close-up mountain views. Annapurna Base Camp offers a longer journey and a more immersive Himalayan experience.

  • Is Mardi Himal Trek family-friendly?

Indeed, the Mardi Himal Trek is regarded as one of the best short Himalayan treks for families with children aged 7 and up.

Families are increasingly choosing it for its short 5- to 7-day duration, cozy tea-house facilities, and serene environment. And, it’s much less hectic than the traditional Annapurna Base Camp route.

  • Can solo travelers do the Mardi Himal Trek?

It is still possible to finish the Mardi Himal Trek alone, although it is no longer entirely unguided. As of now, trekking rules in Nepal require that international travelers traveling alone must employ a licensed local guide.

You can still go alone without joining a larger tour group, which gives you the advantage of a private guide who can adjust to your schedule, pace, and photo stops.

  • What is one thing trekkers wish they knew before doing Mardi Himal?

Many trekkers underestimate how cold High Camp can be, especially before sunrise hikes to the viewpoint.

  • Why is Mardi Himal becoming so popular?

The combination of spectacular mountain views, shorter duration, fewer crowds, and easy access from Pokhara makes Mardi Himal one of Nepal’s fastest-growing trekking destinations.

Unforgettable Trekking Experience & Warmest Hospitality with Silvermoon Adventure Silvermoon Adventure and Tours provides comprehensive, reliable, and top-tier service, treating every guest with genuine warmth and care. They truly make Nepal feel like a second home, and trekking with them means you won't need to worry about a single detail from start to finish. Why I Chose Silvermoon Adventure and Tours I learned about the team through Deepak. Once he knew my flight details and preferred trek, he immediately customized a detailed itinerary for me. While I consulted other travel agencies in Nepal, Deepak and the Silvermoon team provided the most thorough plan and transparent information, giving me complete confidence to book with them. The Trekking Experience My guide, Basanta, took exceptional care of me throughout the entire journey. Along the trail, he constantly checked in on how I was feeling, offered breaks, and even offered to carry my backpack to ensure I was comfortable. Every time we arrived at a tea house, he made sure I had food and drinks ready—even reminding me to order meals when I was too exhausted to think about it. On the day we reached Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), I developed a mild headache. Basanta immediately arranged garlic soup to help relieve the altitude sickness and provided medicine to soothe the pain. His attentive care made all the difference in completing the trek safely. Beyond his attentiveness, Basanta is an expert guide who always navigated the easiest paths at trail junctions. Even after we returned to Pokhara for dinner, he ensured I got back to my hotel safely. Deepak also checked in via message every single day during the trek to ensure everything was running smoothly. After the Trek The team's hospitality didn't end on the trail. Back in Kathmandu, the founder, Bishal, gave me a warm welcome, helped me retrieve my luggage from the hotel, showed me around the city, and personally arranged my airport drop-off. Thank you to Basanta, Bishal, and Deepak for an unforgettable experience. I will definitely return to Nepal and trek with Silvermoon Adventure and Tours again. Highly recommended!

Excellent guide and wonderful experience My husband and I had the most amazing experience trekking in the Himalayas to Poonhill with Bishal. We were very well looked after and felt extremely safe with him at all times. He made us laugh when the hike got a little trickier and always made sure we had hot drinks and food as soon as we got to the huts. We would highly recommend him as a wonderful and trustworthy guide and will definitely contact him again when we have plans to come back!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ An unforgettable solo trek! As a solo traveler, I couldn't have asked for a better experience on the 5-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Silver Moon Adventure. From day one, I felt completely safe, welcomed, and well taken care of. My guide was incredible—friendly, professional, and full of knowledge about the mountains, local villages, and trail. The itinerary was perfectly paced, taking us through beautiful forests and culture-rich Gurung villages before that breathtaking sunrise at Base Camp. Meals, tea houses, and logistics were handled seamlessly every step of the way, making the entire journey completely stress-free. If you’re planning to trek in Nepal—especially solo—I can't recommend Silver Moon Adventure enough. Thank you for such a memorable adventure, I’d trek with you again in a heartbeat! 🏔️✨
