Trip Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is the kind of journey that unfolds naturally over time. This trek is one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal. You get two very different experiences on this trek. One morning, you’re walking up to Poon Hill in the dark, waiting for the light to hit the mountains slowly. A few days later, you’re standing at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m), surrounded by peaks. It’s a nice contrast, and it breaks up the journey in a really satisfying way without making the trek feel too hard.

As you proceed down the route, the scenery changes. It begins with towns, agriculture, and verdant hills where you see people going about their everyday lives. As you ascend, the trail passes through forested areas before entering more open, rocky territory where the mountains start to take center stage. The entire journey is altered when peaks such as Annapurna I, Machapuchare, Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna progressively draw closer.

The trip starts in Kathmandu, where things might initially seem a little overwhelming, but that intensity is a part of the experience. You will next head to Pokhara, which is closer to the mountains and offers a calmer, more relaxed environment.

You start walking towards the hills. With gradual hills, stone trails, and villages like Ulleri and Ghorepani along the route, the first part helps you get into the groove. The environment, the silence, the chilly air, and the slow approach of dawn over the peaks make the early morning trip up Poon Hill easy yet unforgettable.

After here, the route gets calmer as it approaches the Annapurna Sanctuary. The area feels more isolated, with fewer settlements. As you get closer to base camp, you will witness the broader landscape.

It feels like the natural end of everything that came before it when you reach the Annapurna Base Camp. You’re standing in a wide mountain basin, with high peaks rising all around, and a sense of stillness that’s hard to describe until you’re there.

The way back feels much easier. You’re no longer pushing for altitude, so you can actually slow down and enjoy the trail more. You should take a pause at Jhinu. Here, the natural hot springs feel very much perfect after days on the trail. You will be relaxed as you dip your tired legs into the warm water. After that, it’s an easy walk down, then a drive back to Pokhara, and eventually to Kathmandu.

This route offers a great combination of landscape, culture, and accessibility, which is just what you’re looking for in a trip. You still get a true sense of being in the Himalayas, even if it’s not too difficult. This is why the Annapurna Base Camp trek via Poon Hill remains a popular choice for trekkers worldwide.
